Fostering the study of the Yoga-Sutras and their integration into our daily lives.
The Yoga-Sutra of Patañjali in EnglishThe Yoga-Sutra of Patañjali is the central text, the core of practical theory and guiding instruction of all Yoga disciplines and traditions. It defines and delineates the technical, metapsychological, and meditative premises of the philosophical and practical fields of Yoga.
The Yoga-Sutra is one of humanity’s most impressive treatises on consciousness and transcendent psychology. The first translations of the Indian philosophical treatises into European languages appeared in the mid-1800’s. Since then nearly one hundred English versions of the Yoga-Sutra of Patañjali have been produced.
The Unadorned Thread of Yoga presents each of Patanjali's 196 sutras in a two-page format. The left page holds a Sanskrit-English text analysis and the right page presents twelve translations by respected, even revered, authorities. The twelve different voices, all experts in their own right from different traditions and time periods, offer an unprecedented approximation of the Sanskrit into English.
The Unadorned Thread of Yoga provides unique tools for English-speaking students to immerse themselves in the Yoga-Sutra of Patañjali, allowing then to make the path of yoga intimately their own.
Why Study the Yoga-Sūtra?
Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of philosophy, speculative and applied. All Yogic theory emerges from practice and experience. The book that fully contains and distills the ages of experience of master Yogis is The Yoga-Sūtra of Patanjali. With study in The Yoga-Sūtra, a practitioners practice will become full and complete.
In light of the above points, The Yoga-Sūtra submits human consciousness to the scientific method and stimulates high level critical thinking. The Yoga-Sūtra proposes a system that, if followed carefully over time, leads to the disappearance of the wave-making action (turbulence) in the energy field we call the mind, what we refer to, generally speculatively, as “peace of mind.”
